Barack Obama adorably embarrassed Malia on her birthday because that’s “his job”

It’s kind of every dad’s job to embarrass his children, but if your dad is the president? Well, that takes it to a whole new level. Malia Obama found that out on Monday night during the White House’s 4th of July celebration — which also happens to be the newly 18-year-old’s birthday. In the midst of performances by Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe, President Obama stepped up to give a performance of his own and lead everyone in a rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

After giving a speech thanking the military, as well as the night’s performers, Obama added, “And just because it’s a job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I’ve got one last job.”

“It just so happens we celebrate our country’s birthday on the same day we celebrate my oldest daughter’s birthday,” he explained before launching into the song. The whole crowd joined in, and when it was over, the father-daughter duo shared an adorable moment.

Not only was this the last time the Obamas will spend 4th of July in the White House, it’s also the last birthday they’ll spend with Malia before she’s off the in the real world. This smarty-pants is taking a gap year before heading off to Harvard, but before all that, she’s totally willing to spend one last embarrassing moment with her dad.
