Ariel Winter goes on a #rant: 'Screw having to always look appropriate'

Ariel Winter fans know that the Modern Family actress is rarely afraid to speak her mind. She’s vocal about her fashion choices, her body positivity, and her political beliefs. But on Monday night, she upped her game with a three-page “#rant” posted to Instagram.

Winter addressed shaming comments and headlines that focus on her looks. “I’m trying to live my life. People wear shorts. People have wardrobe malfunctions. No one is perfect. I’m not a stylist! I don’t know what to wear everyday so I look ‘appropriate’ or ‘fashionable. Also, screw having to always look appropriate or fashionable,” she wrote.

She also expressed her frustration with the paparazzi, who have taken to following her everywhere from running errands to vacation. “I don’t want people to constantly see me in the news for going to dinner, or grocery shopping, or anything. I want to be in the news when I ASK,” she writes.

The sentiment is reminiscent of what many typically think of as a bygone area of tabloids, when photographers followed around Britney Spears and Jennifer Aniston. For Winter, the early 2000s are back, and they’re following her into parking lots. “Trust me, I don’t want to see me in shorts putting water into my car every single damn day as much as you don’t,” she expressed.

Finally, she opened up about criticism in the form of trollish comments that say, “You accused your mother of sexualizing you yet you’re a whore.” The difference, Winter explained, is that her mother dressed her like she was 24 when she was 8 to 13 years old. At 19, Winter says she is in charge of her own wardrobe and how much she chooses to reveal or cover up is her business and her decision.

Fans are celebrating the #rant, which has more than 80,000 likes on Instagram in less than 12 hours. “You’re not hurting anyone by dressing a certain way. Ignore the haters. Keep doing whatever makes you happy!” wrote one commenter. “This shows you point blank that being famous isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be,” noted another.

This may be Winter’s most extensive revelation about the downside of her life in the spotlight, but she’s spoken out about body positivity repeatedly in the past. “When we try to be free and post what we want, it’s like, look at that slut on social media. That’s not what it is. We’re proud of our bodies. We’re proud of who we are. We’re made the way we are. Why do we care? If I take a picture and I think it looks good — if it’s a little revealing, whatever,” she told Yahoo Style earlier this year.

Winter has continued her crusade against paparazzi photos and exaggerated headlines on Instagram. In June, she shared a picture of herself leaving the grocery store with boyfriend Levi Meaden. “Levi’s SOOO pissed and his face is SOOO good,” she wrote, laughing off the photo. “Take pics on red carpets where we sign up for that not when we’re just trying to grocery shop for f***s sake,” she wrote.

While paparazzi heeding her plea is desirable, it’s obvious Winter has a positive attitude about it all: “Do whatever you want people, just strive to please YOURSELF and NO ONE ELSE.”
