Here's What Jeffree Star and Manny Gutierrez Do When They Really Want Their Highlighter to Pop

There's nothing we love more than a good beauty collaboration, so, naturally, we were all about the Jeffree Star Cosmetics x Manny MUA collaboration from Star and Manny Gutierrez, two YouTube beauty gurus who don't need much of an introduction around here.

The collection, which drops on April 8 at 1 P.M. ET, features a Skin Frost highlighter and two Velour Liquid Lipsticks. (You can get all of the deets and see the swatches here, if you too are counting down the minutes.) We caught up with the two last night at their launch party in West Hollywood, where Glamour learned details about how they came up with the names—Gutierrez had named the highlighter shade, Eclipse, before they even made it—and, of course, how they make their cheekbones stand out from a mile away. Because, really, how can you be in a room with Instagram's top beauty boys and not talk highlighter?

"When we first created the highlighter in the lab, Manny was like, I want it to be extra blinding," said Star, who was obviously game. "I told him, send me five names that you’re thinking, and he said he already had it: Eclipse." The reason? Their brand logos, which if you follow the two closely, you know have had their fair share of headlines this week. "An eclipse happens when the sun and the moon collide, so it worked nicely," Gutierrez said.

They both also shared the same go-to highlighter tip: After applying a base of highlighter, spritz your brush with a makeup setting spray. Then, go back in to pick up more highlighter and layer it over your initial application. "When you add the extra water [to the brush] it breaks up the mica a little bit…and boom. It makes it pop!" Gutierrez told us. A good way to think of it: It intensifies the color in the same way that dampening your eyeshadow makes the color appear richer and more saturated.

Clearly, the trick works. Just take a look at Gutierrez's Instagram post below. Their highlighter is probably visible from the International Space Station.

Try the trick at home with your go-to powder highlighter—or, if you're a superfan, wait until you get your hands on the Jeffree Star Cosmetics x Manny MUA Skin Frost Highlighter later this week.
