If you work in Hollywood, you go to an award show every week from January through March. If you work in magazines, you get one big night: the ASMEs. Presented by The American Society of Magazine Editors, each year the industry gathers in New York to receive awards for best writing, photography, design, and more. The Magazine of the Year award, equivalent to a Best Picture Academy Award,  is granted to magazine brands with outstanding print and digital content, as well as successful products and services, like conferences and events. This year, Vogue took home the top honors.

The magazine’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, accepted the award on behalf of the magazine’s staff of about 100. She thanked her team, the stylists, photographers, and everyone else who works on the iconic fashion publication. But who did she thank by name? Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and Amal Clooney. The Kardashian-Wests famously posed for the magazine’s April 2014 cover, which sold 1.2 million issues (including subscriptions), and along with its #mosttalkedaboutcouple hashtag, jolted Vogue into the zeitgeist. As for Ms. Clooney, Vogue scored an exclusive look at her Oscar de la Renta wedding dress, publishing a picture of the bride to be during a fitting with the designer himself, just days after she wed George Clooney (the image also ran in the September issue). The photograph, and the accompanying article, were soon everywhere. Wintour then added, “This award also recognizes what Vogue has and always will stand for, especially at a time when who and what we compete with is constantly changing.”

For someone so famously resisted the Internet for such a long time, it looks like Wintour has finally learned the value of going viral.
