Angelina Jolie has a special connection to Cambodia. It’s where she filmed Tomb Raider, the country from which she adopted her first child, Maddox, in 2002, and now it’s the subject of her newest film project, First They Killed My Father. Jolie and her six kids (role call: Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 8) attended the world premiere of the film in Siem Reap, Cambodia and met King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk who are, indeed royalty.

The family looked stunning together, and the children look proud of their humanitarian-filmmaker mama. Who wouldn’t though?

At the film screening at Siem Reap’s ancient Terrace of the Elephant, Jolie was joined by the author of the memoir on which the film is based, Loung Ung. According to NY Mag, Ung co-wrote the script with Jolie, but they also received help from Jolie’s two oldest sons. According to The Guardian, Maddox had a large part in the film’s production as well. Jolie told The Guardian,

“He was the one who just called it and said he was ready and that he wanted to work on it, which he did. He read the script, helped with notes, and was in the production meetings.”

Maddox wasn’t the only one who played a part in the making of First They Killed My Father. Jolie told People that her son, Pax, was also helping make the film.

“Pax is doing a lot of the stills. The whole movie is from a child’s point of view.”

Angie told People back in 2015 (jeez, movies take a long time to make!). It must be so exciting for the Jolie-Pitt kids to see the fruits of their labors come to life — and in the place where the film focuses on, no less!

First They Killed My Father, which will be released on Netflix later this year, tells a story about the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s, a tragedy that’s close to Jolie’s heart. At the film’s premiere, Jolie spoke about these feelings for the country, saying,

“This film was not made to focus on the horrors of the past, but to celebrate the resilience, kindness and talent of the Cambodian people… Without Cambodia I may never have become a mother. Part of my heart is and will always be in this country. And part of this country is always with me: Maddox.”

It sounds like the film premiere was a lovely tribute to Cambodia, and that Angie has passed on her love and respect for the South East Asian country. Even little Shiloh reportedly went up to the mic and proclaimed, “My name is Shiloh and I love Cambodia.” We can’t wait to see what this family brings us next.
