Adele Added a Brand-New Dress to Her Tour — and It’s Beautiful
When Adele kicked off the Australia leg of her world tour last night, she debuted something exciting. No, not a new song (though we’ll always welcome one of those). The Grammy award-winning singer took the stage in Perth for her first concert of 2017 in a stunning new dress from designer Zuhair Murad‘s 2015 haute couture collection.
The off-the-shoulder silhouette is unique for Adele, who has famously shunned the pop-star tradition of changing outfits multiple times during performances in favor of wearing one dress, and one dress only, during her tour.
For the U.S. leg of her tour, which began last summer, Adele sported just one sparkling Burberry gown designed by Christopher Bailey (paired with a single pair of flats, of course). The singer has, in fact, worn Burberry over the course of her career more than any other brand, even wearing the label for her Vogue cover last March — British loyalty, and all that.
But last night, she changed it up with a Zuhair Murad burgundy tulle gown that appeared to be literally dripping with sequins. While the runway version of the dress featured short sleeves, the custom version for Adele appears to have three-quarter length sleeves and some extra lining to protect against those powerful overhead concert lights.
Adele is just the latest in a line of A-list musicians who have worn the somewhat under-the-radar, Beirut-based designer’s creations onstage and on the red carpet. Known for creating glamorous confections full of tulle, beading, and ruffles, Murad’s big celebrity break came when J.Lo wore his design to the Met Gala in 2010 — and she didn’t stop there. Lopez sported a gown with a plunging neckline from the designer at the 2015 Golden Globes, and just last year, she enlisted him to help create the costumes for her Las Vegas residency. Singers including Katy Perry and Beyoncé and actresses such as Scarlett Johansson and Lily Collins have followed suit, and the rest is red carpet history.
Because if this year’s Grammy Awards proved anything, it’s that as go Adele and Beyoncé, so goes the world — music, fashion, or otherwise.
