Adele Is Back!... As George Michael?

It’s been more than a hot second (and then some) since Adele was on the scene. Since having her son in 2012 and recording the James Bond theme “Skyfall” the following year, the notoriously paparazzi-shy singer has kept things very much on the down low. But she reintroduced herself to the public Wednesday with a whole new look. Gone were her signature teased bouffant, rosy cheeks, and LBD. They were instead replaced by … something that looked a lot like ‘80s-era George Michael! What a drag! (Literally.)

Adele tweeted some snaps of her done up as the ex-WHAM! star, along with the caption, “Thank you for the birthday wishes I had a wonderful time! I was my hero x #gottahavefaith”—inferring that she had some kind of “fancy dress” birthday bash for her 27th, which was Tuesday.

And sure, she might have just been having some fun dressing up in costume for her big day, but we’d like to think of it as more of a cryptic message from Adele to her anxious and eager fans. So… what could it mean? There are so many possibilities. She could be insinuating that we’ve got to have “Faith” that some day, not far from now, we’ll finally be blessed with new music from her. Maybe Adele really wishes she had some more “Freedom! (’90)” from all the speculation about when she’ll be releasing said music. Or Adele’s comeback song will be a rousing, slow-tempo cover of “I Want Your Sex” (B-Side: “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”).

We’d take any, to be honest—though we’re particularly hopeful it’s the latter.
