This Tech Startup Is Making Painting Your Walls Faster & Easier

Repainting any room is a daunting project. Fortunately, house painting is the latest service to be life-hacked by a tech start-up—just as you thought those drab, white walls were starting to close in on you.

Paintzen, which launched last October, wants to revolutionize the age-old chore of house painting with technology. “We felt that walking to the hardware store and thumbing through those little square swatches was very stone-age,” said CEO Mike Russell. “Before, [you] had to go to the store and carry all of the paint cans home.” Now, the process can be as easy as paint-by-numbers.

Step one: Get a fixed quote by inputting basic information about your space (zip code, number and type of rooms to be painted, approximate ceiling height).

Step two: A project manager contacts you to help you select your paint or wallpaper either from one of Benjamin Moore’s over 3000 existing colors or a custom finish of your choosing (chalkboard paint, specific pattern, even a mural).

Step three: As soon as the following day, an experienced, well-vetted painting professional tackles the job.

By streamlining the process, Paintzen keeps down cost; they charge about $320 to paint an average-sized bedroom, compared to traditional painting services that can charge a minimum of $1,000 per project. “Their prices are better [than regular contractors’],” said blogger Lauren Deneroff, who used Paintzen to make over her nursery with a gray chevron accent wall. “And they cleaned up everything perfectly before they left.”

The company is just as attentive on large-scale projects, according to Evan Rozenberg, who used the service on his New York restaurant Atwood. “They let us keep the paint cans they used in case this coat chips or gets scuffed later on,” he said.

Paintzen plans to roll out more digital tools like an online swatch guide soon, but for now, their combination of tech-enabled service and personalized attention has proved to be a winning formula.
