Waiting until the last minute to throw a Halloween costume together? Been there. Here are five quick and easy ideas based on Hollywood characters and the garments that every girl has in her closet.

1. The Little Black Dress – Depending on the length of your dress, you could channel Wednesday Adams, her mother Morticia, or even the evil Maleficient. Head to your local Halloween store for the long black wigs and ghoulish makeup.

2. The White Shirt – Perhaps the best use of a white button down ever was Uma Thurman’s oft-referenced Mrs. Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction. With a pair of black trousers, a black bob, and a little red lippy, you’re good to go. (Bonus points for dousing yourself in fake blood if you’re reenacting her character’s seminal revival scene.)

3. A Smart Pantsuit – Let the other girls get scantily clad. With a pair of aviator sunglasses (and perhaps a stuffed alien), you’re Agent Scully from X Files! Or perhaps Hillary Clinton. Or Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton.

4. A Floral Print Dress – Throw on some white gloves and a kitten heel and you have yourself a Stepford Wife moment.

5. Workout Gear – With a terry headband you can opt for a ‘80s flashback as Olivia Newton John or Jane Fonda. Though with the athleisure trend kicking into high gear, maybe you’ll want to mimic someone a bit more hardcore like Beyonce. (In which case ditch the headband, throw on a baseball cap and some hightops and you’re good to go.)

Bonus Tip: These garments are rather traditional, so you’ll want to amp up the hair and makeup when appropriate. Wigs are your friend! Or, if you’re in New York or L.A., there is the on-demand beauty service GlamSquad, which has a Halloween special going. Another option is to head to your local beauty counter for tips on how to achieve your character’s essence in a few simple steps.
