3 Ways You're Accidentally Ruining Your Jewelry

By Kat Collings

Have you ever bought a new piece of jewelry only to find that it becomes discolored after you start wearing it regularly? We have too, which is why we reached out to one of our favorite celebrity-beloved jewelry designers, Jennifer Zeuner, to help us get to the bottom of the irksome issue. According to Zeuner, vermeil jewelry, which is sterling silver dipped in gold, succumbs to discolorationmore easily than 14k jewelry when it’s exposed to elements. There are three main things that can cause the finish to discolor, even on high-quality vermeil jewelry like Zeuner’s. Just what are these things you may ask? Scroll down to find out!

“Contact with sweat, ocean water, and perfume can cause the finish to discolor. I often recommend for our customers to remove vermeil jewelry before exercising and swimming, and to avoid spraying perfume directly on the jewelry. In addition, some people’s skin pH is extremely acidic, and this may cause the jewelry to turn colors as well. Some people, myself included, never take their vermeil jewelry off and it looks perfect even after continuous wear.” –Jennifer Zeuner
