10 Secrets of Successful French Couples

By Lilah Nicolaidis

Since we’re fascinated with all things French, we sought out the top 10 secrets of what makes the sparks fly between les amants Francais.

1. They don’t put so much pressure on their relationships.

From day one, French couples don’t obsess over their relationships being parfait. If Céline doesn’t hear from Rémi for a few days after a date, she doesn’t freak out or play passive-aggressive games when she does see him again. And, once in a serious relationship, they continue to spend plenty of time apart with friends. The French attitude is that the worlds of men and women are just different, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

2. Their relationships are more romantic.

French men have the gentleman thing down, meaning they pick up the tab on a date, open doors and help women put on their coats. Americans are quick to label this as old fashioned or even sexist, but French women expect this sort of stuff and think it’s all très romantique.

3. They constantly communicate their emotions.

The French are super-expressive; they like to tell their partners how they feel and are not afraid to show their emotions. This makes for more exciting and passionate fights, leading us to think that their make-up sex must be better too.

4. They dress up for each other.

Why are American women attracted to French men (aside from that make-your-whole-body-tingle accent)? It may have something to do with their seriously charming style. Not to mention, French women are undeniably chic in the most effortless way as well. So next time you’re about to throw on any old pair of jeans to meet your man for a glass (or two) of wine, kick it up a few notches instead. If you look better, you feel better, and confidence makes anyone feel sexier.

5. They work less and vacation more.

Bottom line: French couples have more free time to spend together (or apart) and that strengthens their relationships. The French government also insists on at least 30 paid vacation days a year. Um, when was the last time you even asked your boss for a half day?

6. They’re serious flirts.

Both French men and women are notorious flirts and that obviously keeps things more romantic. So don’t hesitate to give your mate an affectionate squeeze before he leaves for work, or a passionate kiss before dinner just for fun.

7. They eat sexier food.

French cooking is famous for its rich flavors and subtle nuances. Linger with your lover over a sensuous multicourse meal, starting with a glass of champagne, an amuse-bouche (that literally means “something that entertains the mouth”) and then a main dish like coq au vin (chicken in wine), followed by a decadent chocolate dessert and a bottle of delicious French wine. We’re not saying you need to cook this all yourself— make a rez at your favorite French restaurant and get your romance on!

8. They are excellent date planners.

French couples think it’s très important to enjoy culture together, and as a result, they have more to talk about that doesn’t involve their daily routines (work, school or kids). On your next date, head out to a museum, take a walk in a public park or even catch a movie together to spark some new conversations with your partner.

9. They don’t let their kids take over their lives.

We’re not saying they neglect their little ones, but French couples don’t let their kids rule the roost. French families spend time together, bien sur, but couples also make lots of time for themselves, and expect their kids to entertain themselves when mom and dad need a much-deserved break.

10. Their nicknames are adorable.

How can you resist a man who calls you his trésor (treasure), his chou (sweet creampuff) or his lapin (bunny)? Maybe they just sound better in French, but we’d take those over honey, baby or wifey any day.
