‘Dear God, what have I done?’ Christie’s face behind Trump is mocked on Twitter

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie introduced Donald Trump at a press conference in Palm Beach, Fla., on Tuesday night, and then took his place behind the Republican frontrunner. And Christie’s pained facial expression behind the podium did not go unnoticed.


On Friday, Christie endorsed Trump for president.

“I am proud to be here to endorse Donald Trump for president of the United States,” Christie said. “He’ll provide strong, unequivocal leadership. He will do what needs to be done to protect the American people first and foremost, both in the homeland and in creating jobs for this country. And he will make sure that people around the world know that America keeps its word again.”

On Sunday, Hewlett-Packard chief executive Meg Whitman, who served as the national finance co-chairman for Christie’s failed presidential campaign, called his endorsement of Trump “an astonishing display of political opportunism.”

On Tuesday, New Hampshire’s Union Leader newspaper, which endorsed Christie, admitted it was wildly wrong to do so.

“Boy, were we wrong,” Union Leader publisher Joseph W. McQuaid wrote in an editorial. “Watching Christie kiss the Donald’s ring this weekend — and make excuses for the man Christie himself had said was unfit for the presidency — demonstrated how wrong we were. Rather than standing up to the bully, Christie bent his knee. In doing so, he rejected the very principles of his campaign that attracted our support.”

Later Tuesday, six New Jersey newspapers — all owned by Gannett — issued a joint editorial calling for Christie’s resignation.

“We’re fed up with Gov. Chris Christie’s arrogance,” the papers wrote. “We’re fed up with his opportunism. We’re fed up with his hypocrisy.”
