He’s been dubbed the “hairless heir,” but Prince William recently owned his thinning mane, cutting it in a shorter new style that many are now calling a “dad cut.”

The new ’do — clipped closely on the sides and buzzed on the top — made its debut on Sunday, when the father to 2-year-old Prince George and 8-month-old Princess Charlotte stepped out with wife Kate Middleton, 34, who just weeks earlier chopped 6 inches off her hair as well in a “lob” style promptly declared (you guessed it) a “mom cut.”

William, 33, who once called Kate’s long locks a “nightmare,” has been the butt of jokes for his receding hairline for years now. Back in 2012, William’s brother Prince Harry was already openly ribbing him about the thinning. “I think he definitely is brainier than I am, but we established that at school,” Harry said in a TV interview, as William piped in, “And great looks as well,” before Harry finished, “along with his baldness.“

The duo’s dad, Prince Charles, even got into the act, mocking William’s bald spot during his wedding reception speech for the prince and Kate, reportedly getting big laughs from the couple for his apology that there was nothing his son could do because the condition is hereditary.

Mercifully, reaction on social media to William’s short new shear is largely positive. “Looks better then having flying little wispy hairs all over,” wrote one commenter on People StyleWatch’s coverage of his cut. “It actually looks a lot better,” added another commenter. “I think he should go even shorter, but I guess that’s not a good look for the royals.” And yet another offered perspective on the mane event. “Easier for men to … look great balding than a woman. He’s still the handsome Prince he’s always been.”

But Prince William isn’t likely to be irked by this latest round of speculation about his scalp. The man, after all, can take a joke, as he showed introducing Prince George to the public for the first time. The newborn, he laughed "got way more hair than me, thank God!”
