Does Kate Middleton Have a 'Mom' Haircut Now?

Kate Middleton got a haircut, and people can tell (above is the before, left, and after). Cue flashbulbs firing, headlines screaming, and opinions flying. The Duchess of Cambridge had about six inches cut from her glossy brown mane, making it something of a “lob” (long bob) and sparking commentary from every corner of the internet.

Fashionista.com’s coverage referred to Middleton’s new style as “the definition of a Mom Haircut,” and some readers bristled at the label. One reader wrote, “Women should not be made to feel like if they don’t have Victoria’s Secret hair, they automatically have ‘mom hair.’”

Meanwhile, Self magazine’s headline reads, “Don’t Call Kate Middleton’s New Hairstyle A Mom Cut.” But why not? Doesn’t a “mom cut” just mean your hair is easier to manage because you don’t have time to deal with a long styling routine? And isn’t that a good thing?

“We need to start changing the way that we think of the word ‘mom’ for hair,” says Kelly Brandt, a hair stylist with Yves Durif at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City, who happens to also be a mother of three. “Moms are admirable, they’re role models, and the shorter length is just a style choice. The worst thing to do as a mother is to be stagnant with your style — Kate is a young, sexy mom and she deserves to change her look and inspire other women as well.”

Brandt says Middleton’s new look is both fashion forward and more practical for her daily routine. “She has the luxury of pulling her hair into a ponytail and still having fringe on her face,” notes Brandt. “She can wear a tiara with a beautiful upsweep, but this length also fits into her lifestyle for everyday running around. It’s what I strive for with my mom clients — wearable cuts that you can dress up at night.”

On People.com’s Facebook post about the cut, one commenter indicated that the Duchess’s new look makes her more relatable. “The MOM CHOP,” she posted. “Even royals don’t have time for their hair with kids. [Smile]”
