When Suzette and Stephanie Thomas got together on February 22 for their annual joint birthday celebration, the mother-daughter pair didn’t expect that their very best present would arrive later that evening. But when Stephanie, who was 38 weeks pregnant, felt her water break that morning, it became clear that another Thomas girl could share the family birthday.

At 11:28pm on February 22, Kailani Divine Thomas was born at Citizens Medical Center in Texas, sharing the birthday with her mother and grandmother. “She wasn’t supposed to come until March 7, so I didn’t expect her that early,” 29-year-old Stephanie tells Yahoo Parenting. “My mother was into it and hoping for us to all have the same birthday, but I just kept saying ‘no, it’s not going to happen.’ But sure enough, it did.”

Stephanie herself was born two months early, so it certainly seems like the world wanted these three to share their big day. “It felt like divine intervention,” Stephanie says. “So we went with it, and that’s why Divine is Kailani’s middle name.”

Suzette, 53, was thrilled to share her birthday — again — with another Thomas. “It really truly is a blessing for her to come when she did,” the new grandmother told the Victoria Advocate.

And it’s certainly a statistical long shot. The odds of three generations sharing the same birthday are about one in 133,225, according to Jang Woo Park, a math lecturer at University of Houston-Victoria, who spoke to the Victoria Advocate.

Stephanie says she’s looking forward to shared celebrations every February. “We’re going to have joint parties,” she says. “At least until Kailani’s old enough to say she wants her own party.”

In years past, even when Stephanie wanted to celebrate her birthday with her friends, she says she always had dinner with her mom first. Now, she’s looking forward to mom-daughter-grandmother birthday meals.

Stephanie and her partner, Shakara Young, are taking Kailani home Tuesday afternoon.

“She really is the best,” Stephanie says. “I couldn’t imagine a better birthday present.”
