Why Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Aren’t at the 2021 Oscars

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas kicked off the 2021 Oscars by announcing the ceremony’s nominees earlier this year. But tonight at the Academy Awards, the couple opted not to attend amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Their absence isn’t surprising: They weren’t tapped to be presenters, and neither is nominated individually for anything.

Chopra’s film The White Tiger did get one nod though: It is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. But with the ceremony’s reduced size amid the coronavirus pandemic, and Chopra’s work in London currently, the actress understandably didn’t fly back to quarantine and get tested multiple times so she could attend the Los Angeles ceremony.

But Chopra made it clear on her Instagram this week that she and Jonas are separated again as she continues work in the UK:

Chopra spoke to ELLE UK earlier this year about how the couple copes with the distance, as their work often separates them physically.

“We see each other every three weeks,” she said. “Wherever we are in the world, we fly to each other at least once a month for a couple of days. It was our rule when we first got married. Otherwise we’d never see each other. Our teams also had to get married! They have to talk to each other like, ‘I am scheduling her here. No, we can’t do it... This is when we’re free... We have to move this.’ It’s like a big marriage. It’s not just us but our families and teams, too.”
