Whoopi Goldberg started the week off on The View with scathing criticism of President Trump’s continued Twitter attacks on four congresswomen. Trump has lashed out at Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib, also known as “The Squad,” in a series of tweets many have slammed as “racist.”
Goldberg hit back on Monday’s episode of The View, reading off a laundry list of reasons she feels Trump’s tweets aren’t appropriate. “You know you’re a racist when you retweet white supremacists defending you, like Katie Hopkins. You’re racist when you post a photo of Hillary Clinton next to a Jewish star and a pile of money. You know you’re a racist when you complain casino owners who get tax breaks don’t look like Indians,” she said.
Goldberg didn’t stop there. She placed much of the blame on Trump’s senior advisor, Stephen Miller, who defended the president during a recent interview. “Stephen Miller, you are the poster boy for all of this. You put all of this together,” she said.
Co-host Joy Behar took issue with one of Trump’s tweets in which he said the four congresswomen aren’t “capable of loving our country.”
I don’t believe the four Congresswomen are capable of loving our Country. They should apologize to America (and Israel) for the horrible (hateful) things they have said. They are destroying the Democrat Party, but are weak & insecure people who can never destroy our great Nation!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 21, 2019
Behar turned the tables on the Trump, questioning whether he loves his country. “Does he love America? Does someone who praises murderers and autocrats and dictators around the world and goes against the CIA—does he love America?
Viewers on Twitter reacted to both Goldberg’s and Behar’s comments, with many agreeing that the president’s tweets were indeed racist:
The reason trump is saying these horrible racist things is to get people talking about that not what is happening at the border, total human rights violations, and obviously it worked— Tanya (@Tanya58471255) July 22, 2019
We will not let it turn into a country run by racists. We will fight to keep our country land of the free and home of the brave— Nancy Bates (@NancyBa44362621) July 22, 2019
Other disagreed with the panelists and felt the president should be able to speak his mind. One viewer felt it’s the Democrats who are inciting racism and violence:
He says what we all want to say - If you don't like it then you can go somewhere else.— Rev. Martin (@pasto_rev) July 22, 2019
The democrats are inciting racism and violence by accusing everyone that dares to disagree as being racist.— Eric Ready (@EricReady3) July 22, 2019
