What’s better than stargazing alone? How about stargazing next to famed astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson.

On Saturday, Tyson will be on hand at the Amateur Astronomer’s Association’s Autumn Starfest event in Central Park in New York City. The event, held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., is inviting everyone — from those with a passive interest in the stars to the pros — to come to look up and enjoy the night sky together.

Making this stargazing date even more apropos? Saturday happens to be International Observe the Moon night, too.

“International Observe the Moon Night is a time to come together with fellow Moon enthusiasts and curious people worldwide,” NASA explained on its website about the celebration. “Everyone on Earth is invited to learn about lunar science and exploration, take part in celestial observations, and honor cultural and personal connections to the Moon.”

NASA added, it encourages people to interpret the word “observe” as broadly as they wish, meaning you can take a stroll to look up at the moon, seek out new moon knowledge on the internet if it happens to be a cloudy night where you are, or you can attend events like Starfest in New York City.

It also explained the reasoning behind the fall observation date.

“International Observe the Moon Night occurs annually in September or October, when the Moon is around first quarter ― a great phase for evening observing,” the space agency said. “The first-quarter Moon offers excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator (the line between night and day), where shadows enhance the Moon’s cratered landscape.”

Autumn Starfest will be held weather permitting. As of Friday morning, rain is predicted in New York City during the day, according to Weather.com. However, the rain looks to taper off by the evening, meaning those interested in hanging out with Tyson and peering into the sky above together can still hold out a little hope. Stay tuned to the group’s social media page or its website to plan your evening of wonderment appropriately.
