When Selena Gomez posted a comical 8-second clip to TikTok earlier this week, she likely didn't expect some of her 37 million followers to get into a veritable war of words in the comment section, but so goes the internet.

On Tuesday, Gomez posted a reaction video to naturopathic doctor Dawn Bantel's explanation of "heavy" drinking. "The CDC defines heavy drinking as 15 or more drinks a week for men and eight or more drinks per week for women," Bantel (aka @drdawnbantel on TikTok) explains her clip. As the practitioner shares this info, Gomez's facial expression goes from intrigued to surprised to an all-out "yikes," acting as though she might very well be regularly pushing those limits.

"Acting" being the operative word here as Gomez is, after all, an actor, and, as fans pointed out in the comments, not much of a drinker. (Apparently, this is something viewers of the HBO Max show, Selena+Chef, would know, since the star, in one fan's words, "never drinks...even when her friends are.") Plus, Gomez even wrote, "It's a joke" in the caption of her TikTok duet. And yet, that didn't stop the internet trolls from coming out to play. "So one of your best friends gives you her kidney and you continue to drink excessively," one user wrote in a now-deleted comment. "Damn Selena." The Grammy nominee's response? "It was a joke ass." BOOM.

ICYDK, the 29-year-old singer suffers from lupus, an autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and pain in any part of the body, and in 2017, had a kidney transplant due to the chronic illness. The organ donor was Gomez's close friend, Francia Raisa. As Gomezlater explained in an interview on the TODAY Show, "I guess I got to the point where it was really, kind of, life or death."

Despite the gravitas of overall her health situation, Gomez is — one more time for the folks in the back — joking in her recent TikTok video. Even if she wasn't, however, moderate alcohol consumption ("not regularly drinking more than 14 units of alcohol [6 pints of beer or 10 small glasses of low-strength wine] week") is not entirely off the table for kidney transplant recipients, according to the United Kingdom National Health Service. While, yes, transplant recipients are "often advised to refrain from alcohol because of possible interaction with their immunosuppressive medication," research suggests that moderate alcohol consumption is actually associated with reduced risk for mortality renal transplant recipients. And then there's the fact that there's just simply no reason to comment on someone else's health status and lifestyle choices. With all that — and a fiery passion for the Only Murders in the Building star — in mind, Selenators came to their queen's defense. "Even if she does drink it's her choice. She can do whatever she wants to do," wrote one commenter. "For the person who said that, know your place." Another fan commented, "Lmao some of y'all need to understand Selena's humour."

Some even spoke from experience, writing "I had a kidney transplant and we are allowed to drink! Alcohol is metabolized through the liver! We are told to just stay hydrated! Chill people!" And another chimed in, "I have lupus, but I'm not getting offended by her jokes. Let her have humor this illness can take so much from you already."

While the original comment has since been deleted, fans are still showing up to stand by their idol. And even if Gomez wasn't a superstar, this scenario would still teach an important lesson: Let's all stop commenting on strangers' bodies and health statuses. Without going through another person's medical records with a fine-toothed comb, no one has any idea what another person is going through and what they do to maintain optimal physical and mental health for themselves.

So thank you Gomez for standing up for yourself, and thank you Selena Stans for setting the trolls straight.
