PSA: You Can Get Popeyes Chicken For 59 Cents This Week

In honor of its 50th anniversary, Popeyes is "celebrating like it's 1972" with a finger-licking deal that's hard to resist. From now until Sunday, June 19, you can purchase two pieces of chicken for only 59 cents, which was the price back in 1972. In addition to spending at least five dollars, you also have to place your order through the Popeyes website or app to receive the deal.

"Our Signature Chicken at the 1972 price? Celebrating 50 years never looked so good 🧡 Order on Popeyes.com or the app with $5 min," Popeyes wrote in the caption to an Instagram video celebrating the momentous occasion.

Depending on where you live, a two-piece chicken dinner from Popeyes currently costs around $7, so this week's special is quite the deal.

Despite the now-iconic Popeyes name, when the chain first opened its doors 50 years ago the restaurant was called Chicken on the Run. Their chicken was also not as iconic in 1972.

As you can read on the Popeyes website, the story goes like this: "Alvin C. Copeland Sr., opens 'Chicken on the Run' in the New Orleans suburb of Arabi, serving traditional Southern-fried chicken. After several months of lackluster performance, he reopens the restaurant as 'Popeyes' (after Popeye Doyle of The French Connection). This time he sells spicy, New Orleans-style chicken,"

Several years after its launch, Popeyes opened its first franchise restaurant in Louisiana. And in 1980, Popeyes debuted the “Love That Chicken from Popeyes" tagline we all know and love.

In the decades since its opening, Popeyes has launched a number of new popular menu items, including their chicken nuggets, chicken sandwich, and beer can chicken.
