"Massive" Hole Left on Outer Banks Beach Elicits Stern Warning to Visitors

An Outer Banks town has had enough after finding a "massive" hole left unattended on the beach this week.
Kill Devil Hills shared a photo of the town's ocean rescue supervisor looking peeved while standing in a grave-sized hole Tuesday. The frustrating discovery prompted a stern warning of the dangers unattended holes can pose to beachgoers, wildlife, and even first responders.
"I guess we need to say it a little louder for the people in the back," Kill Devil Hills wrote alongside the photo on Facebook. "Digging holes on the beach and leaving them unattended is extremely dangerous!!!"
According to the post, you are more likely to experience a sand hole collapse than a shark attack while visiting the beach. Not only do unattended holes cause numerous injuries to other beachgoers, but they also make it challenging for first responders to quickly get to an emergency on the beach. Plus, holes on the beach can trap sea turtles and their hatchlings.
"Digging holes in the sand can be a serious hazard. If you want to dig a hole on the beach, ONLY dig shallow holes and ALWAYS fill them in once you're finished," the town warned. "Help keep everyone on our beaches safe." Be careful out there and remember to always respect your surroundings
