Lidl Branded Frozen Chopped Spinach Recalled Because of Listeria Risk
If you've got some frozen spinach idling in your freezer, you may want to take a peek at it, as it could be part of yet another recall involving greens.
Per an announcement from the FDA, Frozen Food Development is voluntarily recalling certain lots of Lidl branded 12-ounce packages of Frozen Chopped Spinach because the product has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Items included in the recall are marked with lot # R17742 or R17963 on the back of the bag, and have a best by date of 09/10/23.
The recalled frozen spinach was distributed in Lidl retail stores in the following states: Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
The FDA is urging consumers who have purchased 12-ounce packages of Lidl Frozen Chopped Spinach to either dispose of them immediately or return them to the place of purchase.
Frozen Food Development, which is based in Pennsylvania, noted the potential Listeria risk after routine product testing revealed the presence of Listeria in some 12-ounce packages of Lidl Frozen Chopped Spinach. Production of this product has been temporarily halted, and the FDA and Frozen Food Development are currently investigating the source of the issue.
While no illnesses in connection with Lidl Frozen Chopped Spinach have been reported to date, Listeria can be especially dangerous for pregnant women, the very young, the elderly, and the immune-compromised, and lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections among those groups. Listeria symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal ailments.
