Krispy Kreme’s CEO Responded To Critics Of The Chain’s COVID-19 Vaccine Free Donut Promotion
Update, March 29, 2021: Last week, Krispy Kreme made headlines when it announced that it would be giving away free Original Glazed donuts every day for the rest of the year to anyone who got their COVID-19 vaccine. Now, the chain's CEO is speaking up against some of the criticism the promotion received.
In an interview with Yahoo! Finance, CEO Mike Tattersfield was asked about those who knocked Krispy Kreme for offering donuts to vaccinated people, with many citing concerns about obesity. Mike had a simple reply: "We're a sweet treat company, [and] if folks don't want to visit a donut shop, they don't have to."
He continued by adding that if people, especially those working hard during the COVID-19 pandemic want to take a break and have a donut...it's not a big deal.
"I drop off a lot of doughnuts to the healthcare system. They're very appreciative, given the days that they have to work...people are always looking for a little sweet treat break. It's okay," he told Yahoo!.
As for the financial implications of such promotions, Mike said he isn't worried. He noted the chain has a history of offering free donuts to those in the healthcare field and said Krispy Kreme gave away 30 million doughnuts during all of its promotions last year. "We just focus on actually doing the generosity. That's Krispy Kreme," he said.

Krispy Kreme explained that any guest who shows a valid COVID-19 vaccination card at any U.S. Krispy Kreme location will get a free Original Glazed donut. And this isn't just a one-time deal. Nope, the chain will be offering it every single day through the rest of the year. That means once you get your vaccination, you can wake up every single day knowing you're safer AND that you have a free donut in your future. The way I envy you right now!!!
And that's not all: Krispy Kreme is also spreading the love by delivering free donuts to healthcare workers at select vaccination centers throughout the U.S. in the coming weeks. The donut chain will also be offering its workers up to four hours of paid time off so that they can get their COVID-19 vaccines, too.
But back to the donuts. Yes...you have even more chances to get one on the cheap, even if you haven't gotten your vaccine just yet. Krispy Kreme is also launching “Be Sweet Weekends,” where you can purchase any dozen donuts and receive an additional “Be Sweet Dozen” (featuring a Smiley Face donut!) for $1. The idea is that you can go ahead and share that with a friend or neighbor and spread a little sweetness around. This special dozen will be available for nine weekends from March 27 through May 23.
