There are all sorts of factors to consider when it comes to finding the job industry that's right for you and your career. From low-stress environments to strong parental leave offerings and even the prospect of being able to retire early, many different elements come together to make a certain sector your #1.

Of course, a good salary that reflects your worth and the opportunity for career progression come high up the list, but another thing that's definitely worth considering is whether or not job perks come as standard.

Job perks are varied and can mean anything from a top-notch healthcare insurance package to an out-of-this-world Christmas do (did somebody say 'free bar'?)

But before you're fully embedded into an industry, it can be hard to know whether or not it's scoring top points for perks. Helpfully, a recent survey of over 2,000 UK employees is shining some light on the topic. Super handy if you're just about to start a job search.

The survey was carried out by a research company for Cartwright and Butler, makers of luxury food and gift hampers, and has ranked a range of industries based on how much they spend per employee each year on things like parties, events and training.

Marketing came out on top for employee perks with £1,179.56 being spent per person and the lowest industries for employee perks turned out to be hospitality, utilities, and the third sector.

The research found that overall flexible working hours (28%) is the most popular work perk, followed by employee discounts (24%) and free food and drink (20%).

After a difficult time in the workplace due to the pandemic, the return to offices and something a bit more like normal is the ideal time for companies to show employees how valued they are through perks, say the survey's publishers Cartwright and Butler.

“Work perks help to recruit and retain top employees, boost morale, and improve culture. They’re essential for a thriving workplace. By offering perks it shows employees that they’re appreciated and their commitment to a business is recognised. It’s been a tough year for us all and working life will take a lot of getting used to, especially for those that have been on furlough, so rewarding them with something as a little thank you will go a long way," said Gemma Barton, Head of Marketing at Cartwright and Butler.

So, if you are about to embark on a job search, don't forget the work perks.
