Huron County law enforcement agencies partner to promote traffic safety

Aug. 5—NORWALK — Three area law enforcement agencies are partnering for an enforcement effort aimed at ensuring the safety of the motoring public as they take to the roads this weekend.

Starting Friday and continuing through the weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Huron County Sheriff's Office and the Norwalk Police Department will be increasing enforcement efforts in Norwalk and across Huron County. Troopers, deputies and officers will be focusing on impaired driving in an attempt to reduce the number of fatal and injury crashes.

"Choosing when to get behind the wheel can be a life or death decision, and awareness about the dangers of impaired driving — along with enforcement — is a key part of keeping our roads safe," Huron County Sheriff Todd Corbin said. "If you plan on drinking, you should plan to get from point A to point B without getting behind the wheel."

Since January of 2019, there have been 185 OVI-related crashes in Huron County, with 11 of those being fatal and 95 resulting in injuries.

"Officers will be watching carefully for drivers who are impaired by drugs or alcohol," Norwalk Police Chief Mike Conney said. "We want everyone to make good choices before they get behind the wheel."

"Roadway safety is a shared responsibility" said Lt. Tim Hoffman, commander of the Norwalk Post. "Everyone can contribute to safer roads by ensuring they follow all traffic laws, always wear a safety belt, never drive impaired, and obey speed limits."
