Ford Issues Recall Affecting Over 600 Thousand SUVs Due to Fire Risk
Remedies will be available starting next month.
Ford has issued a recall affecting 634,000 SUVs worldwide. The vehicles in question may suffer from cracks in the fuel line, which could lead to fires igniting under the hood, as reported by CNN.
As confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain Ford Escapes, dated 2020 through 2023, and Bronco Sports, dated 2021 through 2023, that are equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5-liter turbocharged engines are at risk for their fuel injectors cracking, allowing fuel or vapors to leak over high-temperature engine components and ignite.
Repairs for the issue are not yet available. Beginning December 19, 2022, the company will begin contacting owners of affected vehicles, who can bring their cars to their local dealer for a software update, which will include fuel injector leak detection, and a drain tube installation, which will redirect any leaked fuel away from the hot surfaces inside of the engine compartment.
According to CNN, if the updated vehicle detects a possible crack in the injector, it will trigger a dashboard warning light and a reduction in engine power, allowing the driver to safely pull over and call for service.
At this time, Ford is not suggesting that potentially affected vehicles be taken out of service. CNN reports that the company expects the problem will not occur frequently, with 20 fires apparently related to the issue having been reported.
Some of these vehicles were also included in a fire risk recall earlier this year due to potential oil leaks. While the brand says most of those vehicles have been repaired by now, they are still at risk for fire due to fuel leaks and will still need the additional service provided under this new recall.
