The FDA Just Announced Another Romaine Lettuce Recall in 15 States

It comes just over two weeks after a similar recall over E.coli concerns.

Two weeks ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Tanimura & Antle Inc., a Salinas, California-based produce company, voluntarily recalled single-head romaine lettuce due to possible E.coli contamination. Now, the FDA is revealing that Dole Fresh Vegetables is also voluntarily recalling organic romaine lettuce hearts because of a possible risk of E. coli. At this time, no illnesses or hospitalizations have been linked to the recall.

The impacted products were distributed in the following states: Arizona, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Virginia. The lettuce was harvested and packed approximately four weeks ago, so they should no longer be on store shelves. The voluntary recall does not apply to any bagged or clamshell salad romaine product.

"The products being recalled are Dole Organic Romaine Hearts 3pk (UPC 0-71430-90061-1), combined English/French packaging, with Harvested-On dates of 10-23-20 and 10-26-20, and Wild Harvest Organic Romaine Hearts (UPC 7-11535-50201-2), with Harvested-On dates of 10-23-20 and 10-26-20," the release said. The recall comes after the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development conducted a routine sample and a package of Dole Organic Romaine Hearts tested positive for E.coli.

According to the FDA, E.coli can cause diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, fatigue, vomiting, a low-grade fever, and loss of appetite. Although most people recover within a week, some illnesses can last longer and become more severe. Retailers and consumers with questions may call the Dole Consumer Center at 1-800-356-3111, which is open 24 hours a day.
