Joe Exotic’s years-long feud with Carole Baskin has entered a new chapter
The longstanding feud over the zoo made infamous by Netflix’s “Tiger King” docuseries is finally over — and Carole Baskin has won.
A federal judge in Oklahoma awarded ownership of what was once known as the Greater Wynnewood Zoo to Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue Corp, the Associated Press reports.
Her rival Joseph Maldonado-Passage — also known as Joe Exotic — is currently serving a 22-year federal prison term for killing five tigers and plotting to have Baskin killed.
U.S. District Judge Scott Palk’s judgement found that ownership of the zoo had been “fraudulently transferred” to Maldonado-Passage’s mother in an attempt to avoid paying the judgment.
The decision states that the animals must be removed from the property within 120 days, but does not go into detail about what should happen to them.
The Humane Society of the United States issued a statement urging that the animals be transferred to “proper sanctuaries so that they will never suffer again at the hands of unqualified hucksters like Jeff Lowe and Joe Exotic.”
Maldonado-Passage has not only been convicted of serious crimes like animal cruelty — a director on the Netflix show called him “categorically racist,” and footage of him complaining about not being able to use a racial slur surfaced on Twitter after the documentary’s release.
