All you need to get these easy waves is a pair of old stockings.

Celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan gave In The Know this simple DIY for perfect overnight waves. Marjan has over 10 years of experience working with Hollywood’s finest, including Olivia Culpo, Kerry Washington and Dove Cameron.

This simple technique might be exactly what you need after self-isolating for a few weeks — especially for those who have loosened the policies of their usual hair care routines.

“This is a great style for second or third-day hair. But you can also do it on freshly washed hair just make sure it’s damp and not soaking wet,” Marjan told In The Know.

You’ll need a spray bottle to mist your hair (if it’s dry), old stockings and a few hair clips to keep things in place while working.

First, spray hair with water to make it damp (or dry the hair a bit if soaking wet). Part your hair in the middle into two sections. Then roll up the base of the stockings. Next, place the tights on the top of your hair like a headband.

“From here we’re essentially creating a french braid but we’re leaving the stocking section on its own without adding hair to our braid,” Marjan explained. “So each time the stocking section crosses over I leave it as is. Then when the hair section crosses over I add hair from the sides.”

Marjan says the looser the braid the wavier the hair, so the tighter the braid the curlier. Using the leg of the stockings in place of hair strands is Marjan’s trick for getting a more desirable look.

“This creates a different result than a regular french braid when you sleep on it because the hair wraps around the stocking and creates more of a wave or curl as opposed to a crimped effect of a regular braid,” she said.

Next, use the end of the stocking to tie the hair in a knot. Then repeat on the second section of the hair. Finally, go to bed and wake up with perfect curls.

If you’re not convinced just take a look at Marjan’s final reveal. She unfurls the braids to reveal elegant, lustrous waves.
