Celebrity makeup artist-approved makeup tips for beginners

If you’re a beginner to makeup like I was a decade ago, you may not even know where to start when it comes to finding beauty products. Full-on glam and highly-produced videos can make you believe you need 80 million products to get started, but honestly, you don’t.
“Don’t overwhelm yourself! Purchase minimal makeup products that are multi-purpose and affective,” Keanda Rebelle, celebrity makeup artist, told In The Know.
When it comes to application, Rebelle cautions about using too much product — now is not the time to be heavy-handed. “Remember less is more. Apply very little and build if needed to achieve your desired look.”
Rebelle says sheer foundations, tinted moisturizers and even concealers are great starting places for building a foundation on the face. If you find that you need more coverage, you can spot treat those areas or add an additional product (like a pigmented powder for oily skin or a moisturizing concealer for dry skin).
Lastly, Rebelle reminds us that you don’t become a makeup expert overnight. “Practice and take your time. Don’t wait till you have something important to do to try to apply a full face of makeup. Practice when you actually have time.”

So, what does Rebelle recommend in every makeup beginner starter pack? She suggests starting with a primer, a sheer-coverage foundation, concealer, eyebrow pencil, two neutral-tone eyeshadows, mascara, bronzer, blush, and a lip product.
“This is a great starter kit because it’s not a lot of products, and this list creates great makeup habits for beginners,” she tells In The Know. “Plus, you can’t really go wrong with any of these products. After they master their look with these products, they should be comfortable with trying next-step items like a highlight, contour, multiple eyeshadows, a fuller coverage foundation, etc.”
