Brilliant hack turns scuba masks into ventilators
A sporting goods company is teaming up with engineers to combat COVID-19 in an innovative way.
Decathlon is converting its line of snorkeling masks into ventilators and sending them to Italian hospitals, which are struggling with a massive shortage.
According to designboom, Cristian Fracassi and Alessandro Romaioli, two engineers from the Institute of Studies for the Integration of Systems in Rome, Italy, came up with the idea.
It took them only three hours from that point to create a prototype for a 3D-printed valve that converts scuba gear into a ventilator mask.
The two men then created a video explaining the process and shared it online, hoping that hospitals with access to a 3D printer could make their own.
Ventilators are essential to patients who are unable to breathe on their own. This design hack is more than just a fascinating trick — it could save lives.
