So, you have a habit of killing any and all plants you bring home? You’re not alone. We’ve all been guilty of neglecting our greenery, but there is one plant out there that can withstand most situations: the ZZ Plant.
“ZZ plants are really great. They’re from South Africa, they’re really drought tolerant,” Jessika Doyel, manager of retail operations at The Sill, told In The Know when she joined our hosts on ITK Finds Live.
“It’s beginner friendly. And basically, this is one that’s super tolerant of whatever natural light you have. If you have super low light or if [your apartment faces] an alleyway that you don’t get a lot of light, this one would be great for you.”

The ZZ Plant has small bulbs within its roots that hold water to keep it from dying out in dry conditions — aka your apartment when you forget to water it — she explained.
However, one of the best tips for taking care of any plant to help it thrive indoors is to repot it. Repotting is when you take a plant out of its grow pot (the little plastic one it’s sold in), loosen up its roots and replant it in a slightly larger pot.
“Some [plants] are going to be able to survive in [the grow pot], but in order to, I would say, like give it its best life, you’re going to want make sure to go up one or two inches in diameter. And then, just loosen its roots,” Doyel said.
So, if you’ve ever bought a plant and thought all it needed as a little water, that could be your problem. Plants are living things and need to be nurtured at least a little bit with all the basics: water, sunlight and room to stretch its roots.
“When you’re taking care of plants, try to think of their native environment and replicate that,” Doyel said. “You just have to kind of help it along when we’re confining it to indoors.”
