The New York Rangers completed a sweep of the Washington Capitals in the first round of the playoffs and it was their first sweep since 2006-07 against the Atlanta Thrashers. It was the excellent play of Igor Shesterkin and the team's great play on special teams that made the difference. As the Rangers look to continue their playoff run, they will need their star goalie and reliable special teams units to continue coming through in the second round. Two postseasons ago, Shesterkin got off to a rough start and was pulled in back-to-back losses in Game 3 and Game 4 in the Rangers' first-round matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Rangers finished off a sweep of the Washington Capitals with a 4-2 victory in Game 4 of their first-round series Sunday night at Capital One Arena.
John Carlson scored for the Capitals, who are the second wild card from the East. Charlie Lindgren made 19 saves for Washington, which has scored five goals in the series. “We just really, really are struggling to just make that play,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said. New York went 1-for-4 on the power play; Washington was 0-for-6 and allowed a short-handed goal.
