If Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff believes his current group has learned lessons from its early playoff exit and can make a deeper run next spring, he may be in good position to keep the band together. The four biggest-ticket UFAs — Dylan DeMelo, Brenden Dillon, Sean Monahan, and Tyler Toffoli — all spoke at the Jets' “garbage bag day” Thursday at Canada Life Centre.
Winnipeg forward Vladislav Namestnikov and defenceman Brenden Dillon are recovering from injuries and won't be available for Game 5 against Colorado on Tuesday night as the Jets try to avoid playoff elimination. Namestnikov fractured his cheekbone in Game 4 on Sunday when he was hit by a deflected puck on a shot. Dillon suffered a deep laceration on his hand in a scrum after the final horn of Game 3 when he appeared to be cut by a skate blade. Jets coach Rick Bowness said Tuesday following the morning skate in Winnipeg that he checked in with Namestnikov the night before.
The Jets went the opposite way, holding a full-team regular practice as they look to rebound from a third period and Game 3 loss they'd like to forget. Colorado scored five times in the final stanza — including three goals over a six-minute stretch — for a 6-2 win and 2-1 series lead. “We have these five-, six-, seven-minute lapses that are really slipping away from us,” said Jets defenceman Neal Pionk. Colorado's big guns — anchored by superstar forward Nathan MacKinnon and all-world defenceman Cale Makar — have delivered in the first-round series.
