Just months before Evgeny Kuznetsov flapped his arms in celebration along the Madison Square Garden boards following his third-period goal in Game 5, his NHL future was very much in doubt. In 2019, Kuznetsov was suspended from playing for Russia after a positive cocaine test; less than a month later, he was suspended by the NHL for "inappropriate conduct." Following his first practice with the team, Kuznetsov acknowledged his challenges. For Kat Whetstone, it was a message that resonated.
The New York Rangers began the Stanley Cup playoffs with seven straight victories, but concern is creeping in heading into Game 6 of their Eastern Conference second-round game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night in Raleigh, N.C. The Rangers have twice allowed the Hurricanes to stave off elimination, losing 4-3 in Game 4 on Saturday in Raleigh and 4-1 in Game 5 on Monday in New York, leaving the Presidents' Trophy winners clinging to a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. Another loss and New York would be on the verge of becoming the fifth team in NHL history to lose a series after leading 3-0.
It was untreated anxiety and depression that Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard blamed for his alcohol abuse, a problem that reached the point where he needed to step away from hockey. Girard returned to practice a month later, resumed playing and declared: “It changed my life.” Girard was the first of five players to step away this season to receive care from the program jointly run by the league and union — the same number of players who sought help over the previous three years combined.
