After the success of Deadpool last year, almost every actress in Hollywood was vying to get in on the sequel, but it looks like a decision has already been made. According to reports, Atlanta actress Zazie Beetz will play Domino in Deadpool 2, which is slated to come out in early March next year.

The casting of Beetz is a pretty big deal for a few reasons. For one, in the Deadpool comics, Domino (also known as Neena Thurman) is usually portrayed as a white woman. Casting Beetz is a small but significant sign that maybe, just maybe, Hollywood producers are starting to become a little color blind when it comes to casting. Maybe. It’s certainly a good sign, though.

The other reason? The world simply needs more Zazie Beetz in it.

She starred as Van in FX’s Atlanta, playing Donald Glover’s character’s girlfriend, but she was definitely the breakout star of the show. And although Atlanta is a series that everyone should watch (the audience wasn’t exactly widespread) Beetz will now be introduced to huge mainstream audiences. This time next year, everyone will know how great she is, and we can’t wait to watch it all happen.

Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds seemed just as excited as we are when he announced the good news yesterday. On Twitter, in a pretty cryptic way, he wrote, “the Domino effect, Zazie Beetz.” Later, the studios confirmed that the coveted role was all hers.

There were reportedly five actresses up for the role: Lizzy Caplan (The Interview), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), and Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) were all rumored to be in the running to play the mutant. Domino’s partner, Cable, hasn’t been cast yet.

Last year, it was rumored that Kyle Chandler and Mackenzie Davis were booked as Domino and Cable, but apparently that is no longer in the works. Even Leslie Jones wanted in on the movie. She told Seth Myers during an appearance on his show in January, “I would love to be just the sidekick just feeding him back the lines.” That’s not exactly Cable’s role in the story, but if Jones wants to be in Deadpool 2 so badly, maybe they need to tweak the story line and make that happen.

Either way, it’s already going to be worth seeing with Beetz cast as a lead.
