This Is How Zara Got Its Name

As much as we understand — not to mention relate to — your obsession with the affordable retailer, we'd be willing to bet you've never wondered where exactly Zara got its unique name from. We'll admit, we definitely haven't. That being said, what if we told you at one point, Zara wasn't even known as Zara at all? Mind blown.

The very first store was reportedly opened in 1975, founded by a man named Amancio Ortega. It was named Zorba after a film called Zorba the Greek. However, when Amancio realized that there was a bar right down the street with the same moniker (awkward), he promptly renamed the now-iconic high-street store to Zara. And to boot, we came up with Zara based on the lettering he already had for the Zorba store sign. (It's reported that the extra 'a' hailed from another spare set.)
Now that's how Zara came to be, but if you're wondering what the word itself actually means, we've got you covered. YourDictionary.com explains it's an Arabic word given to female babies that's a twentieth-century rendition of 'Sarah' which means "flower."
Pretty interesting, if you ask us. Now that we're on a roll, can someone please tell us where 'Topshop' stemmed from?
