Zachary High student dies after shooting in New Roads

NEW ROADS, La. (BRPROUD) – A Zachary High School student was killed over the weekend in New Roads.

Jonathan Johnson, 16, was shot around 3 a.m. on Sunday on Carver Drive near Wilkins Street.

The Zachary High student was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

There is no word on a motive or suspect in connection with this shooting.

New Roads Mayor Theron Smith said Johnson was his grandson by marriage. Smith said Johnson was a good kid and that he played on the freshman football team for Zachary High School.

The Principal of Zachary High School, Lindsey Spence, released a statement after the loss of the freshman student.

“We are heartbroken to share the news of the tragic loss of Jonathan Johnson, a freshman at Zachary High School. Our most heartfelt prayers are with his family. Please continue to keep them in your prayers. We know that losing Johnathan is not only difficult for his family, but his friends, classmates and staff at ZHS,” stated Spence.

Counseling will be available for students and staff at Zachary High School.

The Baton Rouge Police Department is also investigating a shooting that took place on Sunday.

BRPD said that a woman was shot in the 4400 block of Cannon Street.

They responded around 2:25 p.m. and determined that someone shot into a woman’s vehicle.

EMS said they did take one person to a local hospital.
