Young Wichita wrestlers decorated with national titles

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Beau and Brooks Blevins are decorated wrestlers at just 8 and 10 years old, each taking home lists of titles.

“Some of my favorite parts of wrestling are like traveling around the United States, having fun and meeting my friends,” Brooks said.

“They’re both super competitive,” their dad and coach Nate Blevins said. “They both like to win. They definitely push each other.”

“I just won Tulsa nationals, which is one of the toughest tournaments for kids in the U.S. I was really happy when I won. It was really tough,” Beau said.

Wrestling is a part of growing up in the Blevins house, and the boys started when they were young.

“When I was like around 3, me and my dad would shoot, I’d like work on my singles and stuff, and I just always liked it,” Brooks said.

“My brother started wrestling, so I wanted to wrestle,” Beau said.

The sport teaches them wrestling off the mat.

“Our motto is building champions on the mat and in life,” Nate said. “We talk about the definition of success, talk about persistence, effort, resilience, leadership, courage, confidence, consistency, responsibility, all are things that we think translate into life skills, and wrestling teaches that. It teaches them to get comfortable being uncomfortable, and the delayed gratification piece of it where they’re putting in the work today, but they may not see those results for 30, 60, 90 days down the road. And so, you know, maybe they lose two or three matches in the year, but it’s only losses they don’t learn from. One of our things is sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. If you go back and evaluate the film, and we get better, and we make the appropriate adjustments at the end of the year, we might beat that candidate.”

Nate says working for what you want is important today.

“I think the kids now, we live in an internet world, digital age,” Nate said. “They might tell their mom, I need to get this game, or we can get on Amazon and have something here the next day. Whereas wrestling, a lot like life, you got to put in a lot of work to get that promotion or to get that job or to pass that test. So it’s, you know, it’s not instant results in the real world. And so I think it teaches them those skills, and they get comfortable with doing things that are difficult.”

The boys’ accomplishments fuel new goals.

“At home, we have a goal board, and we have like goals to win, like the Triple Crown, state title, and lots of other stuff like Tulsa Kickoff, like Tulsa Nationals and Reno.”

Beau’s next goal is to win Reno Worlds so he can get the trinity.

Nate says although his boys have the same love for wrestling, they are different.

“Beau just goes to work,” Nate said. “He has five or six things that he does at an elite level. Brooks is probably a little bit more technical as far as what he can do and how many moves. But both they’re both super competitive. They both like to win. They definitely push each other, and it’s good that they’re two years apart in age with about the same age group. So, if we want to go down and work on some stuff in the basement, they have good practice partners. And I think as much as they kind of fight at times and don’t get along, it’s something that they’ll be grateful for when they get older.”
