New Yorkers can get money for a new air conditioner

NEW YORK (PIX11) — If you are a New Yorker, you could be eligible for a state benefit that gives people money toward buying an air conditioner or fan, including installation.

Cooling Assistance is offered through New York State’s Home Energy Assistance Program or HEAP.

If a New Yorker is deemed eligible, they can get up to $800 for a window or portable air conditioner unit or fan — with installation for a window unit. Those with an existing wall sleeve unit can get up to $1,000.

“This program provides air conditioners and fans for New Yorkers at high risk of heat-related illness to help them keep cool during the summer months,” New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Acting Commissioner Barbara C. Guinn told PIX11 News. “We encourage everyone who may be eligible to apply soon so that their air conditioner can be installed before we experience the worst of the hot weather.”

The program is limited to one unit per household, and the home needs to be eligible for or already have HEAP benefits. You are also required to have someone who lives in the home who is a U.S. citizen or someone who “has satisfactory immigration status.” You also need to have a broken air conditioner or one that is five or more years old.

A complete list of the eligibility requirements, including the income requirements, can be found here. If you’re interested, you can apply for funding on ACCESS HRA.
