WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita State legend Cheese Johnson is continuing his mission to give back to kids in his community.

On Friday night, awards and certificates were handed out for students taking part in “U Jump,” a mentoring program run by Johnson. It focuses on the “average” students who get passing grades but are at risk of being overlooked.

Teachers and principals help identify who those students are.

“They have more insight into who can fit into our program because you have to be academically like a 2.5 to get in the program just to start,” Johnson said. “But if you have a 1.8, but we’re looking for those kids that are really, really trying, those are the kids we try to focus on.”

This is the third year of the program, which emphasizes empowerment, entrepreneurship and mentoring.
