'Worst Roads in North America': Michigan's bad roads could win you pothole-proof tires

Do you think that Michigan has the worst roads in the country? Here's your opportunity to prove it.

Nokian Tyres is hosting its third annual "Worst Roads in North America" competition in which drivers can vote on the worst of eight notoriously rugged states and provinces in the U.S. and Canada in a bracket-style tournament. Then, they can enter the competition themselves with their argument and photographic evidence of their bad roads for a chance to win a free set of durable Nokian Tyres One tires.

Nokia Tyres makes pothole-resistant One, Outpost and Remedy tires, as well as a variety of other all-season and all-weather products.

First-round matchups for the tournament include:

  • Quebec (last year's winner of "Worst Roads in North America") vs. Alberta

  • British Columbia vs. Ontario

  • Oregon vs. Illinois

  • Colorado vs. Massachusetts

Drivers can enter the prize pool until March 29 at NokianTires.com/Pothole. To vote in the tournament, complete the polls on Nokian Tyres' Facebook and Instagram.

As a reminder, if you see a pothole while driving and are unable to safely steer around it, the Michigan Department of Transportation recommends that you slow down, straighten your wheel to hit it squarely, release the brakes, and roll through to avoid severely damaging your vehicle.

If you encounter a pothole on a city street or country road, you can report it to the city public works department or county road commission. If you see a pothole on a state trunkline − an M, I or U.S. route − you can report it through the Michigan Department of Transportation's online form or by calling the Pothole Hotline at 888-296-4546.
