World’s oldest known wild bird still looking for love

(WJW) – The world’s oldest known wild bird was photographed at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in March.

Wisdom, who is a beloved Laysan albatross, or mōlī, is in her 70s. She has been seen sporadically since arriving at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge for nesting season in late November, according to a post on the USFWS Columbia Pacific Northwest Facebook page.

According to the post, Wisdom has a long-time mate, named Akeakamai, but he has not been seen during the last two nesting seasons.

According to the post, Supervisory Wildlife Biologist at the National Wildlife Refuge Jonathan Plissnersaid female mōlī only lay a single egg in the first half of December.

But, that didn’t stop Wisdom from participating in mating dances with a few suitors.

“She was still actively courting other birds in March,” Plissner said, according to the post.

Good news for Ohio turkey hunters

According to the post, Wisdom was first identified in 1956 after she laid an egg. Because large seabirds aren’t known to breed before age 5, it is estimated that she has produced about 50-60 eggs and as many as 30 chicks in her lifetime.

“Each year, millions of seabirds return to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in the North Pacific Ocean to nest and raise their young. Wisdom, specifically, has been doing this since the Eisenhower administration,” the post said.
