Woodlawn Cemetery Davis St. gates damaged in car crash; main gates replaced

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — If you’ve gone past Woodlawn Cemetery on Davis Street recently you might’ve noticed the gates damaged from an incident that happened over the weekend.

According to Sherry Mandell, secretary of the Woodlawn Cemetery Commission, around 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, a car crashed into the closed iron gates of the cemetery, damaging both gates and taking one off the pillar.

Mandell said that the driver of the vehicle wasn’t injured during the crash and was treated by medical teams.

Mandell said that she’s thankful no one was hurt in the crash and added that on Monday, April 16, the cemetery’s main gates were reinstalled after a car crashed into them in July of 2023.

The main gates were repaired by a local ironworker who was able to replace parts on the historic gates to bring them back to working condition.

Mandell said the same person who fixed the main gates is going to be used to handle the Davis Street gates and said they can be repaired.

Mandell added that the driver’s insurance covered the gates in both situations.
