You won't believe how much Starbucks will make from that Game of Thrones blunder

From Cosmopolitan

  • While HBO insist the error was "blown out of proportion", a new report reveals how much money Starbucks are set to make from the blunder - and it's unbelievable.

While the last episode of Game Of Thrones brought us a LOT of drama to dissect (oh hey Brienne's heartbreak and Missandei's dying words), many viewers couldn't quite get over the accidental coffee cup that was left in shot.

After fans picked up on the error, HBO released a tongue in cheek statement which read, "The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea."

Art director Hauke Richter later added to Variety: "Things can get forgotten on set. [The coffee cup error has been] so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with Thrones’ so far."

Despite it widely being reported as a Starbucks cup, HBO confirmed to INSIDER that the cup was actually from the set's canteen services, rather than the popular chain.

Regardless, Stacy Jones, CEO of a specialist product placement marketing agency told the publication that Starbucks would've had to pay $250,000 to $1 million for one of their drinks to be included in the show.

And, what's even more ridiculous than that? The publicity value for the coffee company will reportedly be enormous.

"The total audience that's talking about this - we're surpassing 100 million people probably and it's all over the world," Stacy continued. "The entire world right now is talking about Starbucks and 'Game of Thrones,' which is crazy! That doesn't happen for a brand.

"The publicity value is going into the tens of millions," she said, adding: "It doesn't matter, at all [that the coffee isn't actually from Starbucks]."

Tens of millions? Oh. My. God. How do we go about leaving our Instagram handle balanced on the side of a Game Of Thrones set please?
