For years, there has been backlash against Black Friday and the fact that it prioritizes consumerism over family values. So for 2017, one online retailer is “breaking up with Black Friday.” ModCloth will be shut down on Black Friday and will be using the day to donate to a good cause. The company encourages others to do the same this Thanksgiving weekend.

While many people will be spending the morning of November 24th in long lines at stores, ModCloth doesn’t even want its shoppers browsing its website this Black Friday. In a press release, ModCloth wrote:

“This year, the brand is inviting its shoppers and employees to spend the holiday as it should be spent, with family, friends, and leftover pie.”

But besides spending the day after Thanksgiving with family, the company — which was controversially purchased by Walmart this year — is also making a charitable donation. It will be donating over $5 million in merchandise to Dress for Success. As Dress for Success states on its website:

“Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.”

Dress for Success is a popular organization (the cast of Hamilton donated its salaries to the organization for the 2017 International Women’s Day) that does a lot of good and ModCloth supporting this cause makes perfect sense. After all, ModCloth has been helping many of us add style to our professional attire since it opened 15 years ago.

Along with its own charitable giving, ModCloth wants you to recognize someone who is doing good in their community.

Nominate a charitable person you know to ModCloth by writing about their cause on Instagram or Twitter. Make sure to include a photo or video and tag @ModCloth with the hashtags #BlackFridayBreakup and #ModClothGivingContest. The contest started on November 20th and will run until November 24th at 11:59 p.m. EST. If your nominee is chosen, they could win $4,500 to support their cause.

While you can’t peruse ModCloth this Black Friday, the site is down for a good reason. And don’t worry — you can get a jumpstart on Cyber Monday with ModCloth since you can get 30 percent off and free shipping starting on Sunday, November 26th. So relax and spend Black Friday with your family and friends with the knowledge you can get some great deals come Sunday. We’re pretty sure that’s what Thanksgiving is all about.
