Video from the scene showed clothing and blood on the platform next to a stopped subway train.

The victim, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators believe the victim was traveling from nearby North Hollywood when she was stabbed in an unprovoked attack.

The suspect was said to be carrying two bags when he fled the station.

About 30 minutes later, a North Hollywood patrol unit spotted a man matching the suspect’s description and took him into custody near Ventura Boulevard and Vineland Avenue, police said.

Train service was halted until further notice from the station to downtown Los Angeles due to the investigation.

A bus bridge service was available to riders between the North Hollywood and Hollywood-Highland stations, L.A. Metro spokesperson Dave Sotero said.
