A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was stabbed to death on a busy street in north London.

Police were called to Burnt Oak Broadway, in Edgware, just before midday on Thursday, along with paramedics and an air ambulance crew. A woman was treated for stab injuries but died at the scene.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said efforts were continuing to identify her and inform her next of kin.

Police said the woman is believed to be in her 60s.

A 22-year-old man was arrested in the Colindale area on Thursday afternoon and he is in custody at a north London police station.

Supt Tony Bellis, from the Met’s North-West Command Unit, said: “This is a significant development in this investigation and comes as a result of fast-time work from specialist detectives working alongside local officers.

“The investigation remains in its early stages, and we continue to work to establish why this incident took place, including whether the person responsible was known to the woman who died. I would urge people to refrain from speculating about the circumstances while this work is ongoing.

“A family has been left devastated by this shocking attack and my thoughts are with them at this unimaginably difficult time.”

He added: “I understand the shock and concern this very sad incident will cause.

“I want to reassure people that it will be investigated by a specialist team of experienced homicide detectives, and we will support them in their work to identify and arrest whoever is responsible.

“Local residents will see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days. I would ask the community to be patient while officers carry out this vital work. If you have any concerns, please speak to an officer or your local policing team.”
