Woman sentenced to 17 years for brutally assaulting 83-year-old victim in 2022

DILLON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Dillon woman was sentenced Tuesday to 17 years in prison for brutally beating an 83-year-old victim in July 2022, according to the 4th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Joanna Mack, 37, plead guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in Dillon County court. Assistant Solicitor, Shipp Daniel, who prosecuted the case, said Mack’s actions were a senseless act of violence.

“There is nothing the criminal justice system can do to restore the victim’s family, but today we got some amount of justice,” Daniel said. “We are thankful to the court for its tough sentence.”

The victim’s family was present at the hearing and explained to the court how much the incident changed their lives, the solicitor’s office said.

Judge Griffin said criminal sentencing is the most difficult thing a circuit court judge has to do. “But this case deserves a strict sentence,” Griffin said.

According to South Carolina law, Mack must serve at least 85% of her sentence, the solicitor’s office said.
