‘We all said a prayer:’ Woman recalls meeting Foley hit-and-run victim shortly before SUV struck, killed her

UPDATE (5:43 p.m.) There has been another deadly hit-and-run in Baldwin County.
It happened Wednesday night at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and Grantham Road.

Haygen Lightfoot, 30, was killed; Charles Crocker, 81, of Fairhope, was the driver of the SUV that investigators say hit her and never stopped.

A traffic homicide investigation is now underway. Events leading up to, during, and after the crash were all captured on multiple security cameras.

Screenshots captured from those security cameras show an SUV seconds before Haygen Lightfoot was hit as she waited on her scooter on Highway 98 to turn onto Grantham Road.

What happened next is still hard for Sharron Womock to believe.

“He just kept on going,” she said.

She and Lightfoot had been in the bar off Highway 98 Wednesday night.

“We just met her and she was so sweet,” says Womock. “She said she just moved here.”

After a while, Womock says, Lightfoot left to go home but wanted to stop by a nearby gas station.

“All of a sudden, a few minutes later, two ladies come flying in wanting to know if there was anybody that knew this girl out here.”

Orange spray paint on the pavement marks the point of impact and stretches almost 100 feet.

Womock watched video footage of the crash captured on multiple security cameras.

“She had her wheel turned. She was fixing to make the turn here, the vehicle over here had stopped and then all of a sudden here comes this truck flying down the road.”

The bar emptied to help, but Womock says there was only so much they could do.

“We all said a prayer, we all sat right there and said a prayer,” she said.

The SUV was located in the Barnwell community. It has been impounded, and investigators say there is no doubt it was the vehicle that hit and killed Lightfoot.

UPDATE (4:12 p.m.): Police say they are looking for the driver who hit and killed a woman Wednesday night in Baldwin County.

Haygen Kristian Taylor Lightfoot, 30, was critically injured when the scooter she was operating was struck by a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Charles P. Crocker, 81, of Fairhope, according to an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency news release.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 98 between Foley and Magnolia Springs outside a local bar, News 5 has learned.

Lightfoot was reportedly out at the bar and having drinks with friends before the incident; she was heading home when she was hit and was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital, where she died of her injuries, according to the release.

The bar’s security cameras captured the incident, and WKRG News 5’s Debbie Williams watched the footage.

She said she observed the “SUV flying down the road and not even slowing down during or after he struck her.”

The vehicle has been located, but police say they are looking for Crocker.
